Personal Digital Assistant (PDA's)
What is it?
PDA's have rapidly become established as a business tool. In many ways they are the digital replacement of the ever present yuppie ‘filo-fax' of the 1980's only this time they can provide real productivity. Usually a smallish hand held device that acts as an address book, diary, and note pad. More sophisticated models have applications such as web browsing, email, word processing and spreadsheets whilst others also allow you to use them as MP3 players.
Why have one?
PDA's are all about contact ability and productivity. Whilst the Palm product was the first fully fledged PDA, Microsoft has quickly caught up and the Pocket PC is taking the market by storm.
PDA's can be synchronised to your desktop PC and many have mini versions of Microsoft's popular applications loaded on them (Word, Excel, Internet Explorer etc.) This means you can take files with you, work on them and synchronise when you get back to the office. With optional communications attachments PDA's can send and receive email via either Wi-Fi, dial up or GPRS. Third party applications abound such as Satellite Navigation, movie players and games.
